# Data standards

## Dates

All dates except date of birth use `YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS±HH:MM` (the offset is the difference from GMT). For example, `2011-08-10T12:30:19-04:00` is August 10, 2011, 12:30:19 at GMT-4.

Date of birth uses `YYYY-MM-DD`, for example `2011-05-01`.

## Numbers

Numbers use US format with no thousands separator, and `.` as the decimal separator.

| Valid | Rejected |
| --------- | ------------------------ |
| `140530` | `140,530` |
| `15.50` | `15,50` |
| `1950.25` | `1,950.25` or `1.950,25` |

## Text encoding

Data must be UTF-8, with special characters escaped using JSON encoding.

## Country codes

Use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes. For example, the United Kingdom is `GB`.

## Residency of the insured

US travel insurance products are regulated by state, so benefits, limits and pricing can depend on the insured's state of residence. Send all of these in every quote request:
